Wyclef to run for President of Haiti?

Wyclef Jean

Recently, rumors have circulated around the web about Wyclef running for President of Haiti.  Well this past Tuesday he officially confirmed his run for Presidency in Haiti’s Nov. 28th elections.   Clef, who was appointed Haiti Ambassador-at-Large in 2007, spoke in an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN’s Larry King Live yesterday saying,

“This is my first time announcing it live…I feel that me running, it brings a neutral situation, meaning that Wyclef Jean can sit with any political party, have a conversation. I’m coming in neutral … I represent the voice of the youth which is over 50% of the population.”

Wyclef is popular with the youth of Haiti and obviously has the financial backing to invest in his political efforts, but does this means he’s qualified for the job?  According to the Haitian Constitution, anyone running for Presidency must have lived in the country 5 consecutive years and have citizenship.  It is believed that Clef has dual citizenship with Haiti and the United States but has not lived in the country since he was 9 years old.

Also running for President is Wyclef uncle and Haitian Ambassador to the US Raymond Joseph.  Raymond, when asked in an interview with the Monitor, if he will be running against his nephew says, “No, I wouldn’t say running against, I would say running parallel…I think Haiti needs all her sons and daughters.”

There is no doubt the Clef will get lots of love and support during his run but some are skeptical, actor/activist Sean Penn also interviewed with Wolf Blitzer about Wyclef saying,

“This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent. For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence,”

Haiti needs all the help she can get right now but if Wyclef wins the Presidency will this be another case of power in the wrong hands?
